When other girls her age were jumping rope and playing with Barbies, Debbie spent her free time after school assisting her father with ad paste-up and overlays while listening to her grandfather chat up clients. As founders of Elgin Advertising, the two men created many memorable ad campaigns — and one future marketing entrepreneur.

Years later, Debbie cold-called her way into her first job with a national promotional products company. She worked with small and large companies, helping them build their brands as she built hers, and in 1994, HyperGrafX was founded. Armed with a Mac and a few very loyal clients, she and her crew set out to make their mark amidst the technology boom and dotcom craze, creating brand identities, building web sites and sales collateral, and helping clients promote their companies.

Fast forward a few years and a company later, and HGX Creative was born, with the notion that, yes, Mr. Gekko, greed can be good.

Debbie has learned it’s fun to create things people will want to engage with, get, use, save, pass on or pass down. “No one enters a sweepstakes so that they can get on a mailing list,” she says. “They enter because they want the prize and they like the idea that they might win. People will stand in a long line at a tradeshow to get a giveaway they want, but won’t do that for a brochure. BUT, if you can get them to wait for the giveaway, you can also get that collateral in their hands. We find ways to do both, because we tap in to that incredibly powerful emotion – greed. We get people to ACT on their inner voice that says, ‘I love that, I want that, I have to have that, what do I need to do to get that?’”

Debbie continues to use the power of persuasion and the art of the deal, as her father and grandfather did before her, to help HGX clients close a sale, nurture a customer, sign on a new client, or acquire a donor.

That’s what all the marketing “stuff” is really all about, isn’t it?
